Laboratory Testing

When it comes to getting to the root cause of a health challenge/s there are many approaches.

Specific laboratory testing whilst incredibly useful in determining baselines and measurable markers, are not always necessary. When applying a Functional Medicine approach to health, often great improvements can be made by making specific changes to diet and lifestyle as a first line approach.

If you know you need support but not sure where to start I offer a free 15 minute Discovery Call to discuss your specific case and if Functional Medicine or laboratory testing is the best approach for you. You can book this below.

For some individuals testing is recommended and serves a therapeutic benefit as it may offer a much clearer understanding as to the unique causes of an individual’s health challenges. I recommend booking a discovery call prior to ordering any tests, to help ascertain what the best approach and lab tests (if indeed helpful, would be for you).

Below you will find a short list of some of the functional labs I offer.

When ordering any of the tests below, please book your results consultation straight after placing your order. The prices below are what the labs charge for the test, so you will need to book and pay for a separate results consultation here.

Results usually take >4 weeks, so please ensure you allow adequate time to receive these.

This test analyses serum levels of TSH, total T4, free T4, free T3, anti-TG antibodies, and anti-TPO antibodies to assess central and peripheral thyroid function, as well as thyroid auto-immunity.

Test Type: Serum Blood Test (additional cost for obtaining blood sample)

Adrenal Stress Profile

  • ANALYTES - Cortisol and DHEA

  • REQUIREMENTS - 4 saliva samples (5ml) collected at specific times over 24-hour period (frozen)

A Comprehensive Tool to Asses the HPA Axis—Stress Response and Resiliency

The Adrenal Stress Profile (ASP) provides an assessment of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis using carefully timed salivary samples of the hormones cortisol and DHEA. Salivary testing is an easy, non-invasive option to measure unbound, biologically active parent hormone levels.

Daily hassles, chronic pain, blood sugar dysregulation, work stressors, and poor relationship quality can alter the HPA axis. Imbalances in adrenal hormones can have a wide range of negative consequences that can adversely impact a patient's overall quality of life. The symptoms of HPA axis dysfunction can be vague, and are highly variable, but may include: fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, depression, GI complaints, and chronic pain. HPA axis dysfunction is associated with many conditions including:

  • hypertension

  • cardiovascular disease

  • gastrointestinal and immune dysregulation

  • diabetes and metabolic syndrome

  • depression

  • chronic fatigue

  • persistent pain

  • neurodegenerative disease and cognitive decline

Adrenal Stress Profile testing can reveal these HPA axis imbalances and provide direction for clinical intervention with targeted therapeutic treatments, such as nutrient support and/or adaptogens, stress management, behavioural modification, and lifestyle interventions.

Optional Add-on:

Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR)

  • Two awakening samples to evaluate CAR

  • CAR is a transient, immediate rise in cortisol upon awakening and is distinct from the diurnal rhythm. CAR reflects a person's ability to cope with anticipated challenges and their perception of control around chronic stress, providing insight into HPA axis resiliency.

GI Effects Comprehensive Stool Profile

The GI Effects Comprehensive Stool Profile can reveal important information about the root cause of many common gastrointestinal symptoms such as gas, bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and constipation. This stool analysis utilises biomarkers such as faecal calprotectin to differentiate between Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).4,5 In addition, Genova's GI Effects test can be used to evaluate patients with a clinical history that suggests a gastrointestinal infection or dysbiosis.

Gut microbes are codependent with one another and with their human host, and the health of one affects the other. A sizeable volume of research associates a dysbiotic, or imbalanced gut microbiome with multiple disease states both within and outside of the GI tract.2,3 The diverse metabolic activities of the microbiome ultimately impact the human host, and the activities of the human host ultimately affect the health of their microbiome.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

Requirements

  • SIBO 2 Hr - Six fasting breath samples, taken at Baseline, 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes.

  • SIBO 3 Hr - Eight fasting breath samples, taken at Baseline, 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 150 minutes, and 180 minutes.

Uncover the Cause of Unexplained Abdominal Symptoms with Breath Testing

SIBO is a common clinical condition and can develop in a variety of patient populations.

Genova's SIBO Profiles are non-invasive breath tests which capture exhaled hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) gases following patient ingestion of a lactulose solution to evaluate bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. Levels of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) are also measured in every sample for quality control purposes.

Symptoms of SIBO are non-specific, encompassing abdominal pain/distention, diarrhoea, and flatulence.

Conditions commonly associated with SIBO include:

  • IBS

  • IBD

  • Coeliac Disease

  • Diabetes

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Rosacea

  • Parkinson's Disease

  • Obesity

Risk factors for development of SIBO include structural/anatomic issues, motility disorders, organ system dysfunction, elderly age and various medications (recurrent antibiotics, PPIs) that alter the gut microflora populations.

One Day Hormone Check™

  • ANALYTES - cortisol, DHEA, Melatonin, Oestradiol, Oestriol, Oestrione, Oestrone, Progesterone, Testosterone.

  • REQUIREMENTS - 5 x 3ml saliva.

A 24-hr Salivary Hormone Test for Assessing Key Hormones

The One Day Hormone Check™ is a convenient salivary hormone test that evaluates unbound, bioavailable hormone levels over 24 hours. Specimens collected over 24 hours are examined for levels of oestradiol, oestrone, oestriol, progesterone, the progesterone/oestradiol ratio (P/E2), testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, and melatonin.

The One Day Hormone Check™ provides information about the impact that shifting hormone levels can have in men (andropause or male menopause) and women (perimenopause and menopause). It can reveal imbalances of primary sex hormones and how they relate to other hormones, such as DHEA, cortisol, and melatonin. Using hormone testing, clinicians can customise hormone and/or nutritional therapies and monitor therapy.

Patients with hormone imbalance may present with:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight loss or gain

  • Menstrual irregularities

  • Loss of libido

  • Insomnia

  • Changes in hair and skin

  • Flushes

OAT (Organic Acid Test)

OAT (Organic Acid Test)

GREAT PLAINS

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health with 76 markers. It provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behaviour disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.

Great Plains Organic Acids Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.

BREATH TRACKERS
  • Home breath test

SIBO is characterised by an increase in the number, or a change in, the type of bacteria found in the small intestine. The detection of hydrogen and methane in the breath after ingesting a substrate (lactulose) can help determine if SIBO is the cause of gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, cramping, nausea, reflux, flatulence and belching.

Such symptoms, often non-specific and indistinguishable from those seen in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional digestive disorders, can be the result of bacterial fermentation of short-chain carbohydrates in the small intestine. Risk factors for SIBO include achlorhydria, use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), pancreatitis, diabetic neuropathy, migrating motor complex (MMC) impairment, gastroenteritis, motility disorders, Crohn's Disease, IBS and Coeliac Disease. This simple test is non-invasive, performed at home and requires a 1-2-day preparatory diet and a 12-hours fasting period.

Hair Toxic & Essential Elements

Hair Toxic & Essential Elements

DOCTORS DATA
  • Home hair test

Hair is essentially an excretory tissue rather than a functional tissue. Therefore, hair analysis provides important data that can be used in conjunction with symptoms and other laboratory values. It is an inexpensive and valuable screen for physiological excess, deficiency or maldistribution of elements. As protein is synthesised in the hair follicle, elements are permanently incorporated into the hair and represent a temporal record of element metabolism and toxic exposure. The levels of nutritional elements such as magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium and chromium correlate with levels in organs and other tissues whereas toxic elements may be 200-300 times more highly concentrated in hair than in blood and urine. Hair is generally the tissue of choice for detection of recent exposure to toxic elements such as arsenic, aluminium, cadmium, lead, antimony and mercury. This test may be useful for assessing toxic element exposure, excessive fish consumption, alopecia, depression, fatigue, malabsorption, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance, kidney function, impotence, reduced testosterone, vision problems and Parkinson’s like symptoms.
