Hayfever 101

Exploring Symptoms, Causes, and the Impact of Gut Health and Immunity. Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a prevalent condition that affects individuals worldwide. In this comprehensive blog, we will delve into the intricate details of hayfever, including its symptoms, causes, and the profound influence of gut health and immunity on the severity of symptoms. Additionally, we will explore natural remedies, nutrigenomics, and personalised nutrition as powerful strategies for managing hayfever and other allergies effectively.

1.    Symptoms of hayfever: Hayfever manifests through various uncomfortable and irritating symptoms, including:

•       Frequent sneezing

•       Persistent runny or stuffy nose

•       Itchy or watery eyes

•       Uncomfortable throat or ear itching

•       Persistent coughing

•       Lingering fatigue

2.    Causes of hayfever: Hayfever primarily occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold spores. When individuals with hayfever come into contact with these allergens, their immune system perceives them as threats and triggers an immune response, leading to the release of histamine and other chemicals responsible for hayfever symptoms.

In hayfever, the release of histamine and other chemicals plays a significant role in triggering and exacerbating symptoms. These chemicals are produced by immune cells, specifically mast cells and basophils, in response to exposure to allergens. While these chemicals are part of the body's immune response, their release in excessive amounts or inappropriately can lead to symptoms and discomfort.

Let's explore these chemicals and their effects in more detail:

1.    Histamine: Histamine is a key chemical mediator in hayfever. When allergens such as pollen or dust particles enter the body, immune cells recognise them as threats and release histamine. Histamine causes blood vessels to dilate, leading to increased blood flow and swelling, particularly in the nasal passages. It also stimulates mucus production, resulting in nasal congestion and a runny nose. Histamine is also responsible for the itching sensation often experienced during hayfever.

2.    Leukotrienes: Leukotrienes are another group of chemicals involved in the immune response to allergens. They contribute to inflammation and increased permeability of blood vessels, which can worsen nasal congestion and other hayfever symptoms. Leukotrienes can also cause smooth muscle contraction in the airways, leading to difficulty breathing and wheezing.

3.    Prostaglandins: Prostaglandins are lipid compounds that have various effects on the body, including inflammation and pain. In the context of hayfever, prostaglandins contribute to the inflammatory response in the nasal passages and airways, leading to swelling, congestion, and discomfort.

4.    Cytokines: Cytokines are signaling molecules that regulate immune responses. During hayfever, certain cytokines, such as interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), are released in response to allergen exposure. These cytokines can amplify the immune response and contribute to inflammation and symptom development.

While the release of these chemicals is an essential part of the body's defense mechanism, their excessive or prolonged presence can cause further damage. The inflammatory response triggered by these chemicals can lead to tissue damage, persistent swelling, and ongoing discomfort. Additionally, chronic inflammation and recurrent exposure to allergens can perpetuate the immune response and potentially contribute to long-term complications or the development of other respiratory conditions.

Managing hayfever involves reducing the release of these chemicals and alleviating their effects. This can be achieved through various approaches.

NATURAL TOOLS:

There are several natural tools and strategies that can help manage the release of chemicals involved in hayfever and reduce their impact on the body. Here are some options to consider:

 •   Quercetin: Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid found in certain foods like onions, apples, and berries. It has anti-inflammatory properties and can help stabilize mast cells, which are responsible for releasing histamine. Including quercetin-rich foods in your diet or taking quercetin supplements may help reduce histamine release and alleviate hayfever symptoms.

•   Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can support immune function and reduce histamine levels in the body. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, bell peppers, kiwi, and strawberries. You can also consider taking vitamin C supplements, but it's generally recommended to obtain nutrients from whole foods whenever possible.

•   Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish like salmon, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals. Including omega-3-rich foods in your diet or taking omega-3 supplements can support overall immune and inflammatory balance.

•   Local Honey: Consuming locally sourced honey may help desensitise the body to local pollen and reduce hayfever symptoms over time. It's believed that small amounts of pollen in the honey can act as a natural immunotherapy, gradually building tolerance to allergens.

•   Nasal Irrigation: Nasal irrigation, such as saline nasal rinses or nasal washes, can help remove allergens, mucus, and irritants from the nasal passages, reducing congestion and inflammation. It can be done using a neti pot, squeeze bottle, or nasal irrigation device.

•   Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help soothe irritated nasal passages and provide temporary relief from congestion. You can create steam by filling a bowl with hot water, placing a towel over your head to create a tent, and inhaling the steam for a few minutes.

•   Herbal Remedies: Certain herbal remedies, such as stinging nettle and bromelain, have shown promise in reducing hayfever symptoms. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional or qualified herbalist for guidance on dosage and potential interactions with medications.

•   Stress Management: Stress can worsen hayfever symptoms by impacting immune function. Practicing stress management techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities you enjoy can help reduce stress levels and support overall well-being.

The Immune System's Role in Hayfever:

The immune system plays a vital role in defending the body against harmful substances. In individuals with hayfever, however, the immune system mistakenly identifies harmless allergens as harmful invaders. This triggers an immune response that includes the release of histamine from immune cells called mast cells. Histamine leads to the typical symptoms associated with hayfever, such as nasal congestion, itching, and inflammation. While reading this you might think “Does this mean I have a week immune system?” While it is not accurate to say that your immune system is inherently weak if you experience hayfever, it does indicate that your immune system is hypersensitive to certain allergens. The immune response triggered in hayfever is an exaggerated reaction to substances that are harmless to most people. This hypersensitivity can be influenced by several factors, including genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. Here is what I recommend doing as a preventative measure.

PREVENTION: To PREPARE for the hayfever season and reduce the severity of symptoms, you can consider the following tips:

•       Monitor Pollen Levels: Keep track of pollen forecasts in your area. When the pollen count is high, try to limit your outdoor activities, especially during peak pollen times like early morning or late afternoon.

•       Create a Barrier: During hayfever season, consider keeping windows closed and using air conditioning to filter out pollen. Additionally, using allergen-proof bedding covers can help create a barrier against dust mites.

•       Personal Hygiene: After spending time outdoors, take a shower and wash your hair to remove any pollen that may have settled on your body and hair.

•       Nasal Irrigation: Regular nasal irrigation using a saline solution can help flush out allergens and reduce nasal congestion. Use a neti pot or a nasal irrigation kit as directed to keep your nasal passages clear.

•       Natural Remedies: Explore natural remedies, such as herbal teas, steam inhalation with essential oils (e.g., eucalyptus or peppermint), and local honey. These remedies may provide relief by reducing inflammation and soothing symptoms.

•       Over-the-Counter Medications: Consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about over-the-counter options like antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops. These medications can help alleviate hayfever symptoms, but it's essential to use them as directed and be aware of potential side effects.

•       Boost Your Immune System: Maintain a healthy lifestyle by consuming a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and immune-boosting foods. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management also contribute to overall immune health.

•       Book in with me for a consultation: If hayfever symptoms significantly impact your daily life or if over-the-counter remedies are not providing sufficient relief book in for a functional medicine consultation or laboratory testing. Together we can assess your condition, recommend personalised treatment options. Remember, these tips aim to alleviate symptoms and minimise the impact of hayfever on your daily life. While they may help manage symptoms, they may not eliminate them entirely.

Gut Health and Hayfever:

The gut and immune system have a profound interconnectedness. A healthy gut microbiome helps regulate immune responses, preventing unnecessary allergic reactions. However, gut damage caused by factors such as a poor diet, stress, antibiotics, or certain medications can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to a weakened immune system and increased susceptibility to hayfever and other allergies.

 Gut Damage and Immunity:

When the gut is compromised, it can result in increased inflammation and impaired immune function. Inflammation in the gut can lead to increased permeability of the intestinal lining, allowing toxins and undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream. This phenomenon, known as "leaky gut," can further contribute to systemic inflammation and trigger immune responses, heightening the severity of hayfever symptoms. Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition where the lining of the gut becomes compromised, allowing substances that should remain in the gut to leak into the bloodstream.

Several factors can contribute to the disruption of the gut barrier and the development of leaky gut:

a) Intestinal Inflammation: Chronic inflammation in the gut, often caused by factors such as poor diet, stress, infections, or medication use, can damage the tight junctions between the intestinal cells. These tight junctions act like gates, regulating the passage of substances.

b) Imbalance in Gut Microbiota: An imbalance in the gut microbiota, known as dysbiosis, can promote inflammation and compromise the integrity of the gut lining. Dysbiosis can result from factors such as antibiotic use, a high-sugar diet, or chronic stress.

c) Environmental Factors: Certain environmental factors, such as toxins, pollutants, and certain food additives, can also contribute to gut barrier dysfunction and increased permeability.

When the integrity of the gut lining is compromised, several consequences can occur:

a) Translocation of Toxins and Undigested Food Particles:
With leaky gut, toxins, bacteria, undigested food particles, and other substances that should remain within the gut lumen can escape through the compromised intestinal barrier. These substances can enter the bloodstream and trigger an immune response.

b) Systemic Inflammation: The presence of foreign substances in the bloodstream stimulates the immune system, leading to an inflammatory response throughout the body. This systemic inflammation can exacerbate hayfever symptoms by further activating the immune system's response to allergens.

c) Immune Dysregulation: Leaky gut can disrupt the balance of immune cells and cytokines in the gut, leading to immune dysregulation. This dysregulation can contribute to an overactive immune response to allergens, increasing the severity of hayfever symptoms.

Gut Health and Hayfever !!!!

The gut-immune connection is significant in hayfever and allergy development. A compromised gut barrier can promote immune system imbalances and hypersensitivity, making individuals more prone to allergic reactions. By addressing gut health and reducing leaky gut, it is possible to modulate the immune response and potentially alleviate the severity of hayfever symptoms.

TAKE ACTION! RECOVER YOUR HEALTH THROUGH NUTRITION.

I AM NOW OFFERING DNA Testing Packages.

DNA testing enables you to be proactive with your health.

Nutrigenomics is all about how your diet can change how your genes are expressed, which can have a big impact on health, weight, and fitness.

What you eat will not change the sequence of your DNA, but your diet and lifestyle can turn on or off certain genes or change the way they are expressed, which play a major role in your health outcomes.

I use Lifecode Gx®, which offers a range of specialist nutrigenomics DNA test panels that inform how inherited health risks can be mitigated through personalised nutrition and lifestyle change.

The reports I recommend most frequently include:

•       Nutrient Core: This test analyses how gene variants can affect food tolerance (and intolerance), appetite control and blood sugar balance, vitamin and mineral needs, detoxification ability, and susceptibility to inflammation and infection.

•       Nervous System Report: One of my favorite reports because it gives insight into who we are.
Symptoms of neurotransmitter imbalance can include: mood imbalances, depression, mania, attention deficit and obsessive compulsive disorders, addictive behaviours, motor control disruption, anger, aggression and restlessness.

The report analyses gene variants that impact serotonin (contentment) and melatonin (sleep), dopamine(motivation), noradrenaline and adrenaline (fight or flight) and GABA which is critical for relaxation.

•       Hormones Report: This report is particularly useful for both women and men who have experienced hormonal imbalances, including: infertility, low libido and sex drive, low sperm count, acne, excess facial hair in women, PCOS, PMDD, blood clots, mood swings, depression, substance misuse, poor memory, weight gain, breast appearances in men, and hormone sensitive cancers, such as breast cancer or prostate cancer.
It’s very helpful for women who are experiencing problems with taking HRT.

•       Methylation Report: Imbalances in methylation - too little or too much - can increase susceptibility to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue, infertility, immune and autoimmune conditions, food and chemical sensitivities, and mood and psychiatric disorders, as well as cancer and premature ageing.

•       Metabolics Report:  this report transforms our understanding of how genes confer metabolic individuality and underpin energy regulation, longevity and healthspan. It incorporates over 40 genes and 50 SNPs across 6 pathways, including appetite regulation, nutrient sensing, sugar and fat metabolism, cholesterol and bile, mitochondria and inflammation.

•       Histamine Intolerance Report: The Histamine Intolerance test analyses the genes and nutrients needed to breakdown and remove histamine, showing where disruptions occur and how to support optimal function.

DR. MC APPROVED SOLUTIONS FOR HAYFEVER:

PLEASE REFER BACK TO THE NATURAL TOOLS SECTION , AND PREVENTION SECTION OF THIS ARTICLE. FURTHER TIPS AND TOOLS TO TRY:

DRY NEEDLING (MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE):

(AVAILABLE AT ALIGN. BOOK IN FOR A SESSION BY CALLING: 01534 789367. Address: Lido Medical Centre, Saint Saviour's Road, St. Saviour, Jersey JE2 7LA )

Dry needling (medical acupuncture) is a technique we use at the clinic to address muscular pain and dysfunction. While dry needling primarily focuses on musculoskeletal conditions, we also use some Chinese acupuncture techniques too to support our client’s health and in particular sinus symptoms

The potential theoretical mechanisms by which dry needling/acupuncture may help alleviate hayfever symptoms are:

1.   Neuro-Immune Modulation: Dry needling involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points in the skin and underlying tissues. These needles can stimulate sensory nerves, potentially triggering neurophysiological responses. It is hypothesized that the stimulation of these nerves may influence immune responses and modulate the release of inflammatory mediators involved in hayfever symptoms.

2.    Pain Modulation: Dry needling may help reduce pain and discomfort associated with hayfever symptoms, such as sinus pressure or headaches. By targeting specific trigger points or areas of muscle tension, dry needling can help relax muscles, improve blood flow, and potentially alleviate pain.

3.    Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Stress and emotional factors can influence the severity of hayfever symptoms. Dry needling sessions may promote relaxation and help reduce stress levels, which could indirectly contribute to symptom relief by mitigating the impact of stress on the immune system and overall well-being

(It’s important to emphasise that dry needling should only be performed by a trained and qualified healthcare professional. If you are considering dry needling for hayfever symptoms, both Dr. Marie-Christine Dix and Dr Hannah Patel offer dry needling at Align Health Agency.) Following an initial assessment of your individual case, guidance would be provided on any potential benefits, risks, and an appropriate integration of dry needling as part of a comprehensive whole health approach. At Align we are passionate about whole body medicine and treating the root cause not just the symptoms, to ensure longer lasting results and better overall health for you in the long term.
